Lesbians I Love: Lilli Lewis

LillilewisOut, Black, Lesbian Singer and Musician

I first met Lilli Lewis four years ago in Atlanta, Georgia.

A friend of mine took me to a meeting of Black lesbians and Lilli provided the entertainment.

I was an instant fan of her music from day one and we have remained friends ever since.  There’s not a time when I don’t call her when I’m going to be in her nake of the woods and try to hook up with her or catch one of her shows.

And for those times in between, Lilli was sweet enough to send me a special care package of her latest music that I still have and listen to.

One thing I will say is that Lilli’s voice is incredible and her music is the most relaxing.  The same way many of us feel about Sade, Anita Baker, and Rachelle Ferrell is the way that I feel about Lilli’s music. It ’s for these reasons and more that Lilli Lewis is a Lesbian I Love.

About Lilli Lewis

Lilli Lewis grew up on a dirt road outside of Athens, Georgia. There, in between playing in her father’s garden and going on scavenger hunts, Lilli developed a passion for classical piano. By the age of 3 she was already composing songs that had to be transcribed by her mother’s hand. Often described as an "innovative, soulful" singer and composer, Lewis’ latest release "Sleepers Wake" takes the listener deeper than ever before on a journey of inescapable truths and infinite possibilities. These days, when not traveling on random spirit quests, Lilli resides in Hammond, Lousiana.

In Her Own Words

Describe yourself in one word.
Enamored

Do you think lesbian women are underrepresented?
Very much so.  We’re everywhere but too often no one knows it.

What are some of the things you enjoy doing on your spare time? Favorite hobbies?
Music, music, music…cooking…movies…swimming…reading, and other various sundry extracurricular.

What was your coming out like?
Slow and steady like the turtle in the rabbit race.  I don’t ever know what coming out means until I get that choked feeling that means I’m protecting somebody else from my gayness, at which point, I simply stop doing that.  So far I’ve just required that everyone rise to the occasion and treat me with the love and respect they know I deserve and no one has let me down…yet…

What’s your favorite color?
Red, orange, purple, blue…i just love vibrations, sound or sight…

What’s your favorite food?
Gelato maybe…although lately I’ve really been diggin’ on diet ginger ale w/ a splash of 100% grapefruit juice.

L Word or Girlfriends?
Neither, but if either, both.

Do you prefer fem or butch women and why?
I like women who own themselves.  I don’t care how that manifests, although I do get an extra pitter pat when i’m looking over a cut shoulder while my arms are wrapped around of some sweet, moody, butch.

Favorite body part and why?
My chest, even though it’s flat.  I guess because it’s smooth and golden.  Quite inviting for a weary head to rest a spell.

As Black a woman do you prefer nappy or straight hair and why?
I’m a fan of nappy myself…could be because i’m cheap.  Could be because I don’t think we should have to go out of our way to achieve an "affect" or effect that is not reflective of what we were born with.  black hair is beautiful in every incarnation and black hair rituals are equally so…
