Random Thoughts: Campaign Mailers and Another Kind of False Advertising

It’s now five days before the election, with four of those days being days I am sure to receive what I like to refer to as “physical spam”–a.k.a. campaign mailers–being dropped into my mailbox.

I can’t tell you how many mailers I’ve received in the past two weeks in support of various local measures and candidates, but it’s been a lot to say the least—and in my case, a waste of money. I did my research and made up my mind on who and what I am going to support on the 4th and my decisions had nothing to do with a mailer in my mailbox.

However, with that said, I will say this. I find it hard to take any candidate or elected official serious who sends me mailers that include photos of them from 10 and 20 years ago when they know good and damn well they haven’t looked that good in as many years. If I saw them today in person and held that same mailer with their photo up to them, I’d be hard pressed to make a positive confirmation that it’s even the same person.

Ironically, many of these people are the same people campaigning for “change” but yet have a hard time dealing with “change” when it comes to their own appearance and aging.
