A Response to ‘A Brief for Whitey’…Whitey’s On the Moon

Leave it up to whitey to rewrite history in such a way that favors himself as Blacks greatest savior.

And I quote:

First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known.

Wright ought to go down on his knees and thank God he is an American.

The words above can be attributed to right-wing conservative Pat Buchanan’s A Brief for Whitey.

If you ask me, it sounds like someone’s been drinking unfiltered tap water, if you know what I mean.

Since when is kidnapping, lynching, raping, and torture seen as a good thing? Talk about living in a state of denial.

Pat Buchanan’s comments are exactly the reason why Black people need to address the atrocities committed against us and not leave it to others to rewrite our history. If we don’t we get ludicrous statements like the one above which we all know is about as far from the truth as WMDs in Iraq.

The fact that he felt comfortable enough in his whiteness to say this is what really bothers me and just further illustrates how they continue to try and minimize and justify slavery and years of racial discrimination.

If I follow Buchanan’s logic, as a Black woman I should be thanking my lucky stars that the white man traveled across the Atlantic Ocean and to capture my ancestors and bring them here to work as slaves in his fields and home.

I should be thankful for the trees in the south that held the ropes that were tied around the necks of Black men and women who were lynched at the hands of whitey.

As Black women, we should be rejoicing over the white man’s penchant for our dark chocolate colored skin, big hips, and voluptuous breasts, that frequently took him from the big house to the outhouse where we were.

The Bible, that Christian salvation that Buchanan and those like him speak so passionately about, well it’s the same book that justified whitey owning slaves and the mistreatment of those slaves. Whitey’s Bible came complete with a blue-eyed Jesus to suit and was forced upon his African slaves in their new land. I think Buchanan forgot to mention that part.

Yes, Amerikkka’s been really good to Blacks.

What would a bunch of Africans know about freedom and prosperity anyway?

Before the European whitey and the American whitey showed up in Africa we were just reigning as kings and queens of our own land, providing for our families and villages through harvesting crops and Africa’s natural resources, and praying to the God that we knew and believed in. According to Buchanan, we never knew real freedom and prosperity until the first chain locked around our necks and we were shipped off to a foreign land and forced to cooperate in whitey’s dreams of prosperity.

So here we are in 2008 and Amerikkka is still living in denial.

Pat Buchanan probably believes that Amerikkkan slavery was the best thing to ever happen to us blackfolks, but we know the inconvenient truth.

Buchanan writes that “…It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships…” as if a Princess Line cruise ship pulled up to the West Coast of Africa and rolled out the welcome mat. Try changing the word ‘brought’ to forced, captured, or kidnapped because that’s the reality of what happened.

Africans were doing just fine in Africa until whitey showed up and decided to steal us for our talents at producing beautiful crops and children. That’s the reality. Our crops weren’t dying, whitey’s were. We had our own land and religion before we were forced to adopt theirs.

Second, no people anywhere has done more to lift up blacks than white Americans. Untold trillions have been spent since the ’60s on welfare, food stamps, rent supplements, Section 8 housing, Pell grants, student loans, legal services, Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits and poverty programs designed to bring the African-American community into the mainstream.

Not one of those trillions can bring back from the dead the lives the that were lost at the hand of whitey either here in Amerikkka or during the Middle Passage. Furthermore, Buchanan fails to delve into the reasons that Blacks would need public assistant in the first place. Another gift from whitey to Blacks, Jim Crow and racial discrimination.

But it gets worst.

We hear the grievances. Where is the gratitude?

I’ll be damned before I ever thank whitey for enslaving my ancestors and creating the chaos and confusion that exists today.

However, I’d offer to Pat Buchanan and the like, that they should be thanking their God that the years of white superiority indoctrination fed consciously and subconsciously to Black and brown people has worked so well to the point where we haven’t managed to get it together to come together. Because the day that we do is the day that whitey knows his reign of terror is up.

Pat Buchanan…talk about giving new meaning to “Whitey’s On the Moon…”

I truly believe Buchanan’s words are the beliefs of a great portion of white america. Has he forgot who built this country? This country was built on the blood, sweat, and backs of Blacks. Buchanan needs to check his facts. White folks have received this federal assistance on a greater level than Black people.

This man is miseducated and is being allowed to put his incorrect information out for all to see and accept.
    So sad.

  4. I can’t believe, and yet I can, that this man is one of the ‘great’ religious leaders of this country. This man basically shows the arrogance that remains prevalent in th ewhite community. As much as work to bring all people together, it pisses me off when I see stuff like this.Monica Roberts(my big sis) debate all the time about stuff like this and everytime stuff like this comes up, I feel like Im the one walking a incorrect path. This man and others like him, are just plain insane.

  5. In response to your comment of this:

Since when is kidnapping, lynching, raping, and torture seen as a good thing? Talk about living in a state of denial.

You’re living in the past. Kidnappings, lynchings, rape (gross who would rape a Negroid?) and torture are a day of the past. Now, you NIGGERS do all the kidnappings, rape, and brutal assaults that could be classified as torture against WHITE PEOPLE. Now with the criminal justice system effectively WORTHLESS, it might come down to WHITE PEOPLE, ARMED WITH GUNS, SHOOTING NIGGER CRIMINALS IN THE STREET.

Hell, I might come down to Wilshire Blvd where Jasmyne lives and start shooting fat, uppity, Negress dykes, but of course that is a fantasy of mine since I do not have the finances or transportation to make such a long journey.

  6. WA says:

So sad that you think that White America is actually buying into his crap. This is an extremely right political person and is not demostrative of most of White America. Using him to lump all Whites together as having similar beliefs is as accurate as lumping all of Black America as adhering to the beliefs of the Nation of Yaweh or Islam groups.

  7. Sistah Reality Check says:

I don’t know any whites that think Buchanan is anything but an idiot. Why is he suddenly being held out as the White Spokesman?

I think the trouble begins in our black families when so many parents teach their kids that black = good and white = bad and that you can’t trust white people, and you send little racists out into the world. BTW, a former co-worker of Jasmyne Cannick’s had this to say:

“Jasmyne basically is a no-win situation. She approaches whites with hostility, condescension and suspicion, so naturally they avoid her. Then she brands them as racist. She has no use for other blacks who refuse to stoop to her level of hatred and paranoia and right away they’re labeled oreos.

She’s alienated a long trail of people who now think she’s certifiable, and it’s easy to get Crazy Jasmyne stories from them. She acts like a drama mama, addicted to rage, getting attention and feeling sorry for herself, all up in everybody’s business but her own, which she refuses to deal with. She tells herself she’s a slick operator, but often you wish she’d just close her mouth and think more and arrive at concepts that make sense.

Sadly, Jasmyne’s career is already dead in the water, as she’s deliberately turned off those who would otherwise have been her constituents by insisting on behaving like an embarrassing, whiny, racist, spiteful, overbearing, loudmouth ghetto fool. She’s now irrelevant to the scene.”

  8. South Philly Millie says:

Hmmm. Sure looks like somebody’s deliberately putting up “racist” posts. To “prove” something?

    Zat you, Jas?

  9. Ryan says:

I think that there might be a thin line between correcting a racist and correcting a racist by, in turn, being a racist.

Jasmyne I loved coming to your page because you always had something say, and because you wern’t afraid to say it, I loved the meaning behind the message even more.

I see you on the news and doing your shows here and there, and I must say that I really am blown away by how people are starting to listen up. However, I think that perhaps you should look at how you’re thinking. I know this is how you really feel, and by God you should be allowed to say whatever it is that you feel. But I think it is time to open your eyes and draw in closer to what you feel and then what is right.

“Whitey”? Really Jasmyne? I look at the hateful comments on this page and I cringe, but then I look at your statements and I literally have to stop and take a second look.

Listen to me, and listen to me closely… Pat thinks what he has stated is true. He believes it and he stands behind it. This is his ignorance. How you view those comments that he made and how he views them come from two completely different schools of thought. State how he is wrong, why he is wrong, and remark on how his ignorance has taken him down this path. Don’t, I repeat, don’t rebutt this with more racist thought.

Martin Luther King Jr. pleaded with the African-American community to not attack with the attacks used against them, and I am pleading with you, not to silence yourself, but instead reavaluate your stream of thought and how you come about questioning ignorance in our society.

Take me seriously, because I have been reading your material for years now, and I don’t want you to end up how others are already branding you as; a failure. For you will fail in your journey to right wrongs if you are only feeding the fire instead of drenching it with enlightenment.

    - Sincerely, Ryan

Please pay South Philly Millie, and Sistah Reality Check NO MIND. They bumped their head on some turn the cheek shit. You only have 4 then what????
It amazes me how some Black people try to turn the hand of being prejudice on us.

Sistah Reality Check the only thing my Mom ever told us was to respect others and others will respect you. However to alwasy be careful! But when you have to deal with some WHITES where their families consider us a NIGGERS and everything else derogatory and teach it to their kids. They carry it right from home and into the streets. So I ask you we are just to ignore as they are saying it and treating us indifferently?

Get a FUCKING GRIP this is not the 60’s but the 21st Century. And as a Black Man and as Black Americans we should deserve and DEMAND respect as WHITES would. And we’re simply not having it. Now if you choose to submissive be my guest. But that isn’t happening on this end.

As South Philly Millie if you really think Jasmyne is posting this North Florida Noose bullshit. You can get a grip as well.

    Jasmyne keep on moving on!

The Arabs and your fellow blacks were responsible for the slave trade long before the white man ever arrived on the scene. As for blacks ruling this country ,that will never happen .
Every nation in Africa that has been taken over by blacks is a third world shit hole to live in. Look what has happened to the former country of Rhodesia .It’s now an nation of horrible poverty.
Every big city in this nation that has been run by black mayors and police chiefs has turned into a shit hole to live in. A prime example of this is Washington D.C. ,New Orleans,La. and Detroit,Michgian just to name a few.
Every neighborhood that you people move into turns into a crime infested slum. This is a sad fact that you people choose to ignore and blame on the white man.
Blacks in your glorious Africa have been killing each other for hundreds of years. You can not blame that on the white man.
No one owes you people anything.

Oh but your such educated blacks yea right get alife and learn something.

  14. Phillyman37 says:

People on the right like Pat Buchanan are never going to see the problem of racism from an objective viewpoint. They will always see what they want to see and not how it really is. They will never acknowledge who is responsible for the wealth of this nation. Slavery was a war against the continent of Africa and its people. The institution of slavery is responsible for the death of millions of Africans who were killed by white Europeans on and off the continent.

Those who survived the voyage from their homeland were POWs with no rights. White men here and in Europe achieved wealthful gains from the crime of forced free labor. Additionally, these thieves took the raw minerals from the continent of Africa and sold them to further increase their wealth. The wealth was achieved through the use of (3) means: 1) Cash crops production grew in this country exponentially such as your grains, tobacco, cotton and vegetables. 2) Roads and infrastructure were built using slaves. 3) The banking, insurance and real estate industries can all attribute their foundation here in the United States to slavery. The insurance industry, especially, became wealthy from a system of carrying premiums and claim settlements made on each slave.

Legislation has proved, since the emancipation proclamation, to be meaningless because the Black Code and Jim Crow laws continue to be practiced in this country. It is these practices by racists and bigots on every social economic level that keep the African American community from taking a stronger hold on controlling its own destiny. Here’s the truth: The war against Africa and its people including all of the illegal, criminal acts and practices committed then and now are responsible for breaking a proud strong people. It is the responsibility of the United States – which did the breaking while receiving all of the benefits – to act in word and deed with strong measures that will result in wellness for African Americans as well as Africa.

It was the United States which pumped billions of dollars in Post World War II Germany, Japan and a host of other European nations. In recent times, Germany paid millions in reparations to the surviving family members of those who were killed during the Holocaust. The time is long over do for the continent of Africa and its people to receive the same treatment. The world family can no longer ignore the needs of its first born. The wellness of this world is dependant upon the wellness of Africa and its people. America should and must take the lead in uniting this earth and participating in Africa’s recovery will be an exciting beginning for all.

  15. Apache says:

I think many people are too ignorant in American and World History to be able to comprehend the history of world wide oppression.

European nations have historically raped and pillaged many lands (including the land now called The Americas), they stole natural resources, and destroyed civilizations. Now centuries later, many of their descendants that have received the benefits from this stolen wealth look down at the people of color and think to themselves why aren’t these people wealthy like us, whats wrong with them? It’s the “let them eat cake” mentality, which is closely related to the white mans burden, that hinders the masses from understanding the true nature of what ales blacks in America and and people of color around the world.

To this day there are still money trails from many African nation to a highly lucrative company based in Europe. The same is true in the US, in most black communities and Reservations the money trail usually leads to a non-black person and most of the time a white American.

Having said that, there is only 2 trains of thought regarding the lack of successes of black people in the US and Globally.

    1. You either concede that there is a legacy of oppression and disenfranchisement that has hampered Black people and people of color (slavery, genocide, jim crow, apartheid, colonialisms ).

    2. Or you believe that people of color and black people in particular are in some way shape or form are inherently inferior.

Unfortunately there is no grey area when it comes to this. You either believe in some sort of version related to either 1 or 2.

America needs to re-education itself to cast off the veil of ignorance.

“Being ignorant is not so much a shame, as being unwilling to learn.”
    – Benjamin Franklin

  16. Chitown says:

Excellent post Apache. Its true we need to re educate america. Most people White and black have never heard Black wall Street or Rosewood. All both were highly successfully black towns and cities in America that were burned to the ground and the people executed in masses because of white rage and envy. If every time you saved up enough money to build your own house and someone robed you and burned down your property how can you overcome? Not to mention Blacks have only been legally equal for about 44 years with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. I think change will come generationaly and not individually because the people that lived during those times are irreversibly racist.

  17. kimykali says:

A little off topic but just had to point out that every person in these posts (and many others I have read on this site) that identified themselves as white used the most horrific spelling and grammar! It just cracks me up that we are all using the computer to communicate, which usually comes equipped with spellcheck, yet none of these “contributors” seem to know how to use it. Just wanted to point that out as I think it says something about the value of their opinion…
Oh, and by the way, I’m sure they all had access to an adequate educational system that many persons of color do not, yet still excel into excellence! Thanks for the interesting topics.

  18. Sistah Reality Check says:

    Chris,

Nobody bumped my head until you just now. Every day we see no shortage of black folks who ain’t respecting themselves, are their own worst enemy and how are others gonna respect that? Such as stating without proof that white families consider us niggas and teach it to their kids as you do. In the real world I live in people get treated “indifferently” for just such vicious statements and attitudes and ignoring the fact that all around are white folks who are quiet precisely because they wish no harm and have no desire to offend. Yet we’re supposed to treat these quiet folks like they’re hiding something and must be accused? No judge, no jury, just jail, huh? See, no respect given, so how do you expect any back? Consider that when folks ignore you.

Call me and all “dem dayim whiteys” all the names you like. It won’t change a thing. And that’s the point. You don’t eradicate racism by adding more. By the way I, too, have noted that these so-called racist posters suddenly turn up on this board very conveniently.

Lots of livin in the past among our own, yet precious little talk about Darfur. Why? Maybe the inconvenient fact that whitey isn’t involved and it proves injustice happens among all races?

Anyway, I’m tired of blindly angry black folks presuming to speak for “we” and just making the problem worse with more hostility and accusations instead of personal responsibility and action.

  19. Walk Talk says:

How To Fight Racism in the Black Community (from About.com)

You would think that because black people experience discrimination that racism would not exist within the community. Unfortunately, this is not so. Racism exists in the black community just as it does in other parts of American and European culture. These tips will help you understand and fight racism in the black community.

    Difficulty: Hard
    Time Required: A lifetime

    Here’s How:

Understand what Racism is. Webster’s defines Racism as: A belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. Racism is also defined as the mistreatment of a group of people on the basis of race, color, national origin or ancestry. Racism can be intentional or unintentional.

Think before you speak. Words can hurt, whether you mean them to or not. When describing a person, think if mentioning their whiteness is important to the story. Everyone has an ethnicity, not just people of color. Constantly pointing out race, such as saying “Hand it to that white girl over there,” let along words like “honky,” “whitey,” “pale tails” are demeaning.

Use correct language. Do your refer to everyone from South or Central America as Mexican? If you don’t know someone’s country of origin, don’t assume. Not every white is a European. If you’re unsure, ask.

Don’t Assume. Do you assume that whites are more racist than people of color? That all white people are rich snobs, that gay people are weak and silly, or that Asians are good at math? Stereotypes hurt everyone.

Examine what your prejudices are. When a white stranger approaches, does a voice inside tell you “Oh, good! Time for some casual cruelty! I’ll have fun casting shade with a sly insult or accusation!”

Support predominantly white space. Just like people of color like time away from white people, white people, like it or not, are the majority in America and they too appreciate time away from constant hateful, racist comments made by strangers of color without basis, simply because the person of color feels entitled because they’re disappointed with their life. If you’re of color, try and understand it’s not personal. If an event is advertised for “People of Color Only” would you want whites to object?

Interrupt racist jokes or assumptions. You can do so with out being rude. Don’t let your silence speak for you. Simply say, “I don’t find that funny,” or “I don’t appreciate jokes like that.” You don’t have to side with racist blacks out of a misplaced sense of solidarity.

Make a white friend. From Pam Spauling of Pam’s House Blend “One suggestion that I’d add to the list of remedies and ways to combat racism is a difficult one for many people, and one I believe is the most effective way to bridge the gap — get to know, as a close friend — someone of a different race or culture. Not a work colleague or a neighbor you share casual conversations with, but to push past your comfort zone — make friends you can be close enough to that you can ask and be asked those direct questions about race in an environment of trust.

Learn about whites in history, not just blacks.

Join or start an organization dealing with black racism or human rights. Many groups are also fighting discrimination of any kind, including homophobia and sexism.

Write a letter to the editor of a paper. Encourage them to cover more general social events and stories not just segregated stories about people of color and give them praise if they have done a particularly good job.

Reach out beyond your community. If you belong to a black group, think about joining forces with other human rights groups in your community around any other human rights issue.

Organize. Plan a multi-cultural event, concert or community dialogue.

Expose Yourself. Try to learn about a culture other than your own. Attend a concert, dance or film about another culture. Read a book about fighting black racism or connections between racism, sexism and homophobia.
